![]() When it comes to acne breakouts the first question is usually; how do I get rid of it? No one wants to wake up to a face full of acne, but hey it happens to the best of us! So what exactly is acne anyway? Where does acne come from? And why does it always come unexpectedly like an unwanted guest at your home. Let's first discover exactly what is acne and then we can put together the rest of the puzzle. Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. The pores in your skin connect to oil glands under the skin that creates an oily substance called sebum. The pores are connected to the oil glands by a follicle that carries oil with dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. At times the oil, follicle, and dead skin cells clump together into a ball, bacteria formed within that ball causes swelling, thus creating "zits" or "pimples." Acne can form on any surface of the body, but the most common places are the face, back, and chest. So now we know how acne is formed, let's get rid of it! Getting rid of the acne can be easy once you've figured out what's causing the breakout in the first place. Technically doctors do not have a specific cause for acne, but there are some contributing factors that do play a role. For example: hormonal imbalances/changes effects the body in several ways, with acne being one of them. This can explain why some women may experience acne breakouts before, during, or after their menstrual cycle due to the changes in their hormone levels. The use of oily makeup or skincare products can contribute to acne as well, due to the excess oil buildup on the skin. If you already have oily skin be cautious when using products that are oil based because it may clog your pores. And clogged pores equals acne! Now don't fret there are some wonderful oil-based products that are lightweight, not too heavy on the skin, thus making it more "oily skin friendly." Beauty Elixir is a great option for an oil-based moisturizer, lightweight, and formulated with natural oils for all skin types. Lastly, health and nutrition is an important factor that can contribute largely to acne. If you take certain medications where acne may be a side effect or certain medications may cause hormonal changes. A healthy diet is a major factor because our body needs certain minerals and nutrients to function properly and when we don't provide the body with what it needs, you can see changes on the skin. So here are a list of things that you can do to get rid of acne fast! 1. Spot treatment- place tea tree oil (make sure it's pure and organic) directly on the area where the acne is forming. Tea tree oil can irritate the skin so be sure to dilute it first with a carrier oil, I like to use castor oil or coconut oil. Tea tree oil is anti-bacteria and anti-fungal, thus helping to kill the bacteria growing in the pores. 2. Fresh lemon juice- lemons have antibacterial properties, which will help reduce acne. Lemons juice cleanses the pores to give you healthy skin. Just squeeze a fresh lemon in a bowl, dip a cotton pad into the lemon juice, and rub on the affected area. 3. Activated charcoal- draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt, and other micro-particles to the surface of the skin. Make a facial mask with activated charcoal, coconut oil, and lemons. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until you form a paste and apply directly to the skin. Let it set for 15-20 minutes and rinse off.
